Spinal Decompression

Do not accept lower back and neck pain as a fact of life. Spinal Decompression is the non-surgical answer in advanced technology for eliminating pain.

The most sophisticated non-surgical, FDA Certified procedure for lumbar and cervical disc injuries and disc degeneration. Previous conservative modalities have provided only temporary relief to the majority of patients. As a last resort, patients turn to costly and painful surgery to treat their back pain. However, surgery which is only approximately 47% successful may not provide the long-term solution sought after by patients. Furthermore, a patient must consider the inherent risks of undergoing any surgical procedure.

The well-established statistics relevant to back pain depict that 80% of the population will experience severe back pain during their life, and that millions of people live with chronic back pain each day. Excessive loading of the spine through changes in our lifestyle and extended periods of sitting while driving or working at a desk cause premature degeneration of intervertebral discs, and repeated injury of the disc annulus. With all of this unnatural positioning and loading of the human spine, there is little wonder that severely damaged discs almost never heal.

Nutrition in the disc depends on fluid absorption to bring nutrients and oxygen into the disc. This absorption occurs right through the tough annular fibers which make up the outside of the disc. It is estimated that the cycle of absorption and renewal in the normal disc (necessary for collagen synthesis and repair) takes approximately 500 days. This inherently slow cycle is takes even longer in the damaged or degenerated disc. Lowering intradiscal through spinal decompression pressures greatly facilitates this process and accelerates healing in the disc segment. Accurate and controlled non-surgical decompression of intervertebral discs is now possible in an office environment with the SpineMED® System.

SpineMED Decompression is unlike any other spinal decompression system

The SpineMED® Spinal Decompression Table has taken decompression technology to the next level. Unlike other “Decompression Tables”, the SpineMED® does not employ antiquated traction components such as a traction box, pulleys, drums, ropes and pelvic harnesses. The SpineMED® captures and distracts the human skeletal structure through a unique & proprietary design that is not found on any other distraction (or decompression) device in the world.

Lumbar Decompression

The SpineMED® table is very comfortable. The Pelvic Restraints comfortably secure your pelvis directly to the table therefore reducing the force needed to distract and decompress the spine, which in turn eliminates any unneeded discomfort or side effects. Typical procedure tensions required on the SpineMED® are approximately 60% of what would be prescribed on other decompression tables. The pelvic section of the SpineMED® also pivots to tilt your pelvis between zero and twenty-five degrees to specifically treat only the disc that has been injured. The application and control of the forces being applied to your spine is managed through a proprietary electronic system developed by CERT Health Sciences, LLC. This electronic control system employs the latest in computer technology to achieve precision unattainable on any other decompression table. The computer constantly monitors your progress and senses problems such as a muscle spasm. If a muscle spasm is sensed, the computer immediately reduces tension therefore preventing any type of muscle pain or strain while undergoing decompression. The SpineMED® system is very versatile. The unique Pelvic Restraints are extensively adjustable so that virtually ANY size patient can be comfortably accommodated on the table.

Cervical Decompression

The SpineMED® cervical procedure is similar to the lumbar procedure in that the spine is tilted between 0 and 30-degrees to treat only the damaged disc. The tension used is greatly reduced but is monitored in the same way as the lumbar procedure. The most important part of the SpineMED® cervical decompression system is the way in which your head and neck are secured to the table. Your neck is gently cradled by two gel pad covered brackets that lay right behind your head. There are no harnesses applied and there is absolutely no pressure exerted on your jaw or cheeks therefore not affecting the TMJ.

More and more people are foregoing back surgery to give spinal decompression a try. Back decompression is a gentle and non-invasive alternative to more aggressive treatments used to treat chronic pain. It works by applying gentle pressure to your back in an effort to expand space between compressed discs in your spine. When performed successfully, spinal decompression can provide effective relief for herniated discs, sciatica, pinched nerves and even degenerative disc disorders.

Did you know…

spinal decompression treatments take less than one hour to complete? Many patients find the time relaxing – especially when additional supplemental therapies like electrical stimulation or hot/cold therapy are used prior to or following treatment. If you decide spinal decompression is right for you, expect to visit your Southington chiropractor as much as four times a week to reap maximum benefits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I a candidate for spinal decompression?

Back decompression is not for everyone, and you may not be a candidate for treatment if you have metal rods in your back or are prone to fractures. However, it is a much more conservative treatment option than surgery is. If you are considering back surgery, contact your Southington chiropractor first to find out if you could benefit from spinal decompression therapy.

What should I expect during spinal decompression treatment?

During your back decompression treatment, you will lie flat on your back while a decompression machine gently tugs at your back. The effect is similar to the feeling you get in your back when you hang upside down. The tugging encourages your vertebrae to separate, relieving pressure on discs and nerves.

Do I need to follow any special instructions following my treatment?

Southington back decompression typically requires multiple visits to achieve noticeable results. To maximize your chances of success with decompression, abide by the treatment schedule prescribed by your chiropractor.
