These nerves serve as pathways of sensation for the lower extremities. When a disc presses on a nerve root in the lumbar or sacral region, it results in pain and/or muscle weakness. Causes of “slipped discs” range from bad posture to repetitive heavy lifting. When causes of herniated discs such as tumors, infection, and spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal due to arthritis) have been ruled out, the chiropractor may work to eliminate the causes of future attacks by improving posture, strengthening back and abdominal muscles, and reviewing lifting techniques.
